HarborCast is designed with your privacy as a priority. The app:
HarborCast may request access to your device's location to provide weather and tide data for your area. This location is used on your device to fetch publicly available NOAA weather data and is not shared with third parties. If you enable lightning alerts, an approximate (city-level) version of your alert location is sent to our alert server only to deliver those notifications (see Section 5).
You can deny location access and manually enter your preferred locations instead.
All data you configure in HarborCast (saved locations, preferences, favorite stations) is stored locally on your device only using the app's local storage.
This means:
HarborCast retrieves publicly available weather, tide, lightning, and marine condition data from public sources including NOAA, the National Weather Service, NDBC buoy stations, and NASA satellite imagery. These weather requests are made directly from your device.
HarborCast Pro can send push notifications when lightning is detected near you, even when the app is closed. This feature is off by default and turns on only if you enable it.
When you enable lightning alerts, the app sends the following to our alert server (operated for us by Cloudflare) for the sole purpose of delivering those notifications:
This information is used only to send you lightning alerts. It is not used for advertising or tracking, is not shared with third parties for their own purposes, and is removed when you turn lightning alerts off. Lightning detection is satellite-based and approximate, and is provided for awareness only, not as a substitute for official warnings.
HarborCast does not display any advertising.
HarborCast offers optional PRO features via in-app purchase. These purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store any payment information such as credit card numbers.
HarborCast does not use analytics platforms or advertising networks. The only third parties involved are Apple, which processes subscriptions and delivers push notifications, and Cloudflare, which runs the alert server that sends lightning notifications. Neither receives your data for their own marketing purposes.
HarborCast is a marine weather tool intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13 years of age.
Because your data never leaves your device, it is as secure as your device itself. We recommend:
